There are now eight times more single-person households in the Netherlands than there were 60 years ago. Over three million people live alone and it is likely that half of all households will consist of one person by 2050 (source: NOS).

That is why you hear more and more voices, especially from young people, that more attention should be paid to the situation of singles. Youth sections of political parties called attention to this in recent weeks.

Together is the norm

For example, they feel that society is primarily geared toward getting married and having children. In other words, together is the norm. Practically speaking, someone who lives alone and has no child(ren) also lacks all kinds of financial advantages. Youth departments say they would like to see standards, laws and rules, become broader. A D66 spokesman indicated: “To a large extent, our society is still geared to the classic model family of husband, wife and two children. While that is really changing”.

More singles seek help
