At times, we need what is called a clearing moment. Vacations can be such a time. Time for purification, cleaning up, being in full focus with your partner or family.

Maintaining the relationship: how are we actually doing together? Who have we become in the relationship? We call that discussion brave dialogue. Brave because you make a vulnerable subject discussable. For example, during vacations, as well as during regular weeks. By going through the relationship together for a while at set times.

By doing this regularly, and it does not have to be endlessly long or complicated, you build resistance in your relationship. But also strength and resilience, so that your love can stand up to scrutiny, should it ever be needed. So that the two of you can move with the difficult or unpleasant periods in life.

Refill the tank and keep doing so

That “checking in” with each other, let’s call it that, keeps your collective tank filled. That your relationship remains nimble and flexible. One of the essences of a long relationship is to keep refilling that tank together, a task of both of you. By the way, that also means making time to take good care of yourself. That you cater to what you yourself need; time for yourself, your hobby, your space.

This will prevent short fuses and keep things nice and exciting together. You will maintain your long relationship and also enrich it. You maintain interest, even if your love goes in waves, that’s normal. Sometimes there is distance, you may make love less, and then there is more closeness and infatuation again. Either way, you keep coming back to each other. That is your enduring relationship.
