What does showing vulnerability mean for relationships?
Showing vulnerability means a lot to relationships. It helps break patterns. Yet we also find that difficult. Hard to show. Sign of the times?
Vulnerability means showing who you are. Letting your emotion speak for itself. We often find this scary and sometimes even see it as a sign of weakness. A human trait, but reinforced by a culture of achievement. You are responsible for your own happiness and success, and the expectations, they are great. Expectations we have of life, of ourselves, but also of others.
‘The meaning of life is increasingly defined in terms of material and positional success. Optimally producing, consuming and competing.’ To be read in the essay ‘Do we survive hypermodernity? Not without new life skills’ in Allegiance. You could use some survival strategies with that, you might say.
Vulnerability just so
Can we approach everything rationally? Should we just avoid the deep emotions? However uncomfortable, your vulnerability can actually help you. It is a way to deal with daily pressures. To put things into perspective and really connect with other people. Not only with your partner, but also with the people around you. Family, friends and work colleagues.
Just imagine it, just as an experiment. What would happen if you asked for help more often, voiced your opinion or showed doubt? When you drop the mask and bring out the vulnerability. Only then can you show who you are. Shows you why you do as you do.
Vulnerability is more powerful than you think. And by showing it, you might also inspire others. Wondering how our therapists can help with that?
