Family of origin

The family of origin: your own system, the family you grew up in. That system actually says everything about who you are now. Goes with you like a thread in life. What was it like in the past and how does it affect the present? On the relationship you have or had before?

When we face difficult things and we try to solve them, we often end up with the family of origin. The family in which we grew up. Useful is it, to dare to look back on that. On the atmosphere and patterns of that time and the patterns as they are today. Often they can be traced back to how they used to run. Or even on the lives of grandparents or further still, ancestors.

Breaking old patterns

In an imaginary suitcase, we take with us what we were given as children. Whether we want to or not. The beautiful customs and rituals, the norms and values. But also the less fruitful elements, pushing away emotions, for example. Sometimes these are deep wounds, hidden under the layers of your skin, tucked away. When you want to let those wounds heal or break patterns in your relationship, it helps to look back.

How did you handle the fun and difficult things in the family? How would you like to do that now? ‘Do we dare to break the circle and do things differently?’ Stop harmful patterns and repair where needed. In order to allow and accommodate emotions. To face conflicts differently.

The role of the family of origin

What patterns work through, in your relationship and in parenting? How do you make room for a different sound, for a new story? Our couples therapists will tell you more about the family of origin. And about how to reconcile that with the relationship or family now.
