You may have read in the articles before that we like to be inspired by the work of therapist Esther Perel. Like Esther, in therapy we look at the conditions and climate in the world around us: the fast-paced, the attachment to being independent, but also the growing need to stand still in this, to slow down. This is exactly what makes our approach in couples therapy so special.
We base our couples therapy on systems therapy. We look at the whole system: all the people who play a role and influence in your, in your life. The family you grew up in, your parents, siblings, as well as children, friends or colleagues.
A love relationship constitutes a system in itself. Two partners are separate individuals, but with their connection form a new and different energy. They influence each other with all their unique characteristics. This creates a self-contained dynamic. As Esther Perel explains, “We make each other.
In the system, large or small, all elements are connected. Sometimes problems persist because the system holds them. In therapy, individually or with partners, we explore the various influences. We also look at how to (re)balance the relationships in the system.
In 2018, Esther Perel was a guest on the program Zomergasten. In this extensive interview, she shows very clearly how such a system works. Didn’t see the interview then or want to be inspired by her again? You can find the Summer Guest podcast with Esther here, on NPO Radio 1’s website.
