Talking about sex and intimacy, how do you do it?

Talking about sex, for some it’s a breeze, for others mostly complicated, embarrassing or scary. Because sex is just what you do, right? Yet openness about sex can increase your intimacy and improve sex. How do you tackle it? How do you start the conversation?

Sex and intimacy: sharing your experiences

It is convenient to choose a quiet time, when both of you are relaxed. You can start the conversation by telling your partner what you like during sex. Or talk about the times you enjoyed them so much and what you enjoyed so much then. You may also want to indicate now what you would like more or what you like less. Not reproachfully but from your own feelings. Try to describe it clearly.

Explain how you experience sex, how your body responds to touch, closeness and kind words. To each his or her own so also ask what your partner thinks and what he or she desires. Listen to your partner’s reaction and try to be open to his or her response.

And, of course, everyone expresses themselves in their own way. Direct and explicit or, on the contrary, indirect and veiled. And then there are differences between how men and women talk about sex. The roles we assume within a relationship also come into play.

Communicating about sex step by step

If the threshold is still too high, name it. Tell them you find it difficult to talk about sex and intimacy. Or write your thoughts on a nice bill, as an intermediate step in practicing communicating about intimacy. And fortunately, there is still your so very own and unique nonverbal communication. You can also use your body to indicate what you desire in a gentle and subtle way. Read more about talking about sexuality in this article by Esther Perel.
