Relationship therapy via video call: how does it work?

Since the spring, we too have been working regularly via video calling. Because remote therapy is certainly possible. Here we share experiences and show that and/and ( offline and online therapy) is a valuable solution.

The shift from physical to online has now become so normal, almost everything is done online. So does relationship therapy (by no means always, but a lot more often). From therapy in the practice room to video calling, it has its pros and cons. It is approachable and people are more likely to dare to go to therapy. For young couples with children, it is more practical and for the therapist it is nice to be able to taste the atmosphere of a house.

Relationship therapy is so much more than just talking

Yet relationship therapy does not consist only of words and eye contact. It is much more. Dreaming away at the whistling birds in the trees next to the practice, the outside world that makes you move. We frequently hear, “How nice here, just a change. A different environment can provide the thought: let’s do things differently.

But also the neutral therapist who names and breaks through tensions, for example, by going to make some tea. In the practice room, you slow down the process; you create an in-between space. You are not parents for a while, for a while in a different environment which makes you dare to tell more. Some couples have a drink afterwards or chat on the bike. All connecting elements.

Online vs. offline

It is nice to see couples “live. Seeing people move, seeing doubt, having the deeper conversation. At the same time, of course, we welcome the possibility and flexibility of video calling. Above all, let’s keep the combo: and/and. Making time for therapy in the practice (we keep distance) as well as video calling in between. Because calling also adds a new dimension to counseling. Nice addition, right?
