Within relationships involving autism (and related disorders), the risk of relationship failure appears to be higher than relationships in which partners do not have autism. For example, communication between partners may be very difficult (such as understanding and sensing each other) and expectations may continue to diverge. How can the mediator assist these couples when they do decide to divorce?
To begin, the mediator clarifies all the steps within the divorce process at a leisurely pace. To do so, she takes the time necessary and plans the time frame just a little more broadly than usual.
She also schedules more time until the next appointment. There is thus space to let things sink in and prepare for the next step in the journey. During that bridging time, the mediator emails written information, such as blogs or other info, in preparation for the next appointment. A small effort and partners experience this as relaxing and nice.
If additional support is needed, there is the option of quickly involving a couples therapist “from our own store” in the mediation process. Who will support you through the difficult feelings, or just give helpful handles. Very different from dealing with a lawyer. So we are not dependent on third parties for support, which is convenient!
Perhaps it reassures you that the mediator always tailors the divorce process for you. She tailors the process to the couples’ needs and pace. And even after the divorce and everything surrounding it, the mediator can still be contacted for questions or any uncertainties that may have lingered.
