A relationship therapist works with the two of you together, not with each of you separately. In the sessions the therapist looks at what happens between you: who attacks and who withdraws, where the conversation gets stuck every time and what lies beneath the argument or the silence. Usually it turns out you are not fighting about the dishes or the in-laws, but about whether you still matter to each other.
The relationship therapist takes the lead without judging. They help you put into words what is hard to feel, and make sure you really hear each other. That is how you break the pattern that keeps you stuck and build a way of talking that also works at home, without a therapist in the room.
At Praktijk de Liefde all relationship therapists work from the same systemic approach, combined with EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy). Head, heart and body together: we look at patterns, at the emotional bond and at what happens in your body when things get tense.
Relationship therapist is not a protected title in the Netherlands. Anyone can put it on their door. These six points help you make a good choice.
Look at prior education and membership of a professional association. Our therapists are highly trained, specialised in relationship, family and systemic therapy, and members of professional associations such as NVRG, EFT Netherlands and VVS.
Ask how someone works. Systemic therapy and EFT are evidence-based. A good relationship therapist can explain what happens in the sessions and why.
The therapist takes no sides and lets no one fall. Empathy, genuineness and acceptance: that is the difference between a conversation and a change.
A psychologist usually treats one person and looks at what is going on inside that person. A relationship coach often works practically and solution-focused, without therapeutic training. A relationship therapist works with you as a couple and looks at the dynamic between you: the pattern you maintain together, and how it is fed by what each of you brings from home.
That is why we work systemically. In relationship therapy we look not only at the two of you, but at the whole system you live in: family of origin, children, work and the people who matter, then and now. If you would rather start alone, you can do so through individual therapy with the same therapists.

Nine practices in the Netherlands, plus online. The same approach and the same rates everywhere.
A 60-minute intake costs €179 during the day or €199 in the evening. A follow-up session costs €239 during the day or €259 in the evening. You pay after the session, per session. An intake followed by 4 to 8 sessions is enough for most couples to achieve a lasting improvement.
Relationship therapy is not covered by Dutch health insurance. All rates and payment options are on the rates page.
Book an intake with one of our relationship therapists. No waiting list, no referral needed.
The first session is an introduction. Do you both feel at ease? Do you dare to say what bothers you? If not, we will find a colleague who fits better.
When things are stuck at home, you do not want to wait three months. We have no waiting list: usually an intake within 1 to 2 weeks, during the day or in the evening.
You want to know upfront what to expect. Our rates are published on the website and you pay per session, never a large amount in advance.
